Our bodies are amazing and there is one organ that works harder than the rest to detoxify your body and help us healthy and toxin free- our liver! There are so many areas in our lives that cause our liver to become overworked and compromised. Stress is probably the largest culprit to prevent our livers from working properly but there are other culprits too We all know them-too much sugar, alcohol, unhealthy fats, lack of sleep, many pharmaceutical drugs etc. We need to detoxify our body on an every day basis!
Detoxify your Body Daily
So how does our liver get rid of toxins? According to one of my favourite blogs “Food Matters, “The liver detoxifies and cleanses your body by continuously filtering the blood of poisons that enter it through the digestive tract, the skin, and the respiratory system. But when your liver becomes overworked as a result of stress or excessive exposure to toxins, your entire system can be thrown off balance, and your health severely compromised.
Since the liver is also responsible for producing bile, another form of detoxification that is metabolically necessary for the breakdown and assimilation of fats and proteins from your food, it is exceedingly important that your liver is properly maintained. Without a well-functioning liver, your body will be unable to cleanse itself and absorb nutrients, which is a recipe for a health disaster.”
Food Matters educates us further with a quote from Dr. Karl Maret M.D. “The thousands of enzyme systems that are responsible for virtually every body activity are constructed in the liver,” writes Dr. Karl Maret, M.D., about the importance of vibrant liver function. “The proper functioning of the eyes, the heart, the brain, the gonads, the joints, and the kidneys, are all dependent on good liver activity.”
“If the liver is impaired from constructing even one of the thousands of enzyme systems the body requires, there is an impairment in overall body function and a resultant greater metabolic stress on the individual.”
An easy way to detoxify the body is to add the foods that naturally do this into our daily diet. Here are the top ranked foods you may want to begin incorporating into your diet in order to maintain a healthy liver.
- Beets and Carrots:
- Citrus Fruits: Lemon & Limes
- Brussels sprouts:
- Leafy Green Vegetables: Spinach, lettuce, kale etc.
- Cruciferous Vegetables: Broccoli & Cauliflower especially
- Green Tea:
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil:
- Alternative Grains: Quinoa, Millet, Brown rice, Buckwheat, Amaranth, Kaniwah
I have put a brand new recipe together that contains 5 of the top foods to help you support and detoxify your body (especially your liver) . It takes very little time to make and gets tastier the longer it sits too! Enjoy!
Mexican Corn Chowder
Spring is an especially wonderful time to detoxify your body. I love to come up with new recipes that are so delicious that you and your family have no idea that they are clearing out toxins and boosting their immune systems.
All they know is how they are going to ask for seconds.
The other thing I enjoy is using up what I have in the house and creating a delicious meal without having to go to the store for special ingredients.
I hope you enjoy this Mexican Corn Chowder as much as I enjoyed putting the recipe together. It is quite thick and eats like a meal too!
1 yellow onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 can organic tomato soup
1 small can organic tomato paste
1 can chili beans (drained and washed)
1 cup vegetable or chicken broth
1 can niblets corn
½ cup sundried tomatoes
2 tsp. organic taco seasoning
1 tsp tumeric
In a large Dutch oven on medium heat, sauté the onion and garlic. Add all other ingredients and cook until bubbling. Lower heat to a simmer and let cook for another 30 minutes. That’s it!
Serve for an easy lunch or as a dinner you may wish to make a pot of brown rice and serve the chowder on top. If you are wanting to drop some winter pounds I would serve with a side salad instead of the rice.
