Fall is fast approaching & so are all the new fashion trends. As a personal trainer & transformation coach, many clients that I have worked with over the years have asked how they could dress to look slimmer & taller.
After learning what works for them, many of my clients discover that they already have many garments and pieces that are flattering and slimming in their own closets! When we work them together in a new way, they find a whole new host of ensembles and outfits that make you appear at least ten pounds lighter.
If you would like to Dress to look Slimmer try some or all of these tips:
#1 Own a well tailored suit
No matter whether you are female or male, you always appear slimmer in a well-fitting suit in a shade that is flattering to your overall complexion & coloring. The key lies in the definition provided by the structured shape of the suit pieces. A great quality suit is a basic wardrobe investment but you can also mix and match your suit pieces with other tops, skirts & pants to really get your money back over & over.
Personally, I love to wear my suit jacket as a cover up to go out in the evening too. I either wear it as is over my shoulders or roll up my sleeves a bit to give it a softer look.
If you have a great quality suit in your closet that doesn’t fit quite right or comfortably, consider taking it to a professional tailor.
#2 Clothing Balance
While you go through your current closet, consider balance when configuring outfits and accessories. As an example, if you are going to wear a larger top, go with a form-fitting skirt. Conversely, if you wear a full skirt or wide-leg pant, go with a sleeker top. Also, think about balance in terms of your clothing lengths, too: if you opt for a floor-length skirt, wear a shorter top, and pair mini-skirts or short-shorts with a longer t-shirt or sweater.
#3 Try a Longer Jacket
Over the last few years, the fashion trend in jackets has been for shorter jackets that stop at your waist. Check your closet for your vintage jackets; find the ones that are hip-length and made from structured fabric with tailored and tapered lines. These will give you a sleek, lean appearance that slims your waistline.
#4 Pants and Trousers
While the fall 2022 trend currently is showing very high-rise pants and trousers, mid-rise pants, trousers, and skirts will slim and lengthen your bodies profile. Browse through your closet for bottoms that sit on your hips as opposed to under your hips or resting on your waist. A mid-hip rise cut shortens the distance from the crotch to the waist, so your stomach won’t rest in an unflattering way over your belt.
Aim for a smooth line &, for both men & women, skip the pleats on trousers, too as they will add unnecessary bulk to your torso & legs.
#5 The Classic Dress
There are so many wonderful dresses that can really elongate & enhance your figure. Keep in mind that a plain color dress of classic lines is much more flattering for most body shapes than a dress with a lot of pattern.
#6 The Perfect Jeans
When it comes to jeans, the rules change slightly between pants and trousers. When shopping your closet for jeans, as opposed to more formal pants, mid- to high-rise designs are going to flatter you the most. A good rule of thumb is to search for jeans that fall an inch or two below your belly button.
#7 Slimming Belts
Many people will tell you to skip a belt when trying to appear slimmer. This is actually is incorrect. The right belt will actually go a help to give you a flattering shape! Go with a stretchy belt, to help pull in and control your waist. Remember to avoid fancy buckles and bling! They are fun but will draw attention instantly to the center of your waist.
#8 Tops and T-Shirts
As you go through the tops, tees, and blouses in your closet, place your attention on the necklines. A scoop or V-neck creates the illusion of height and a slim neckline. This subsequently makes your whole frame appear narrower and smaller. If you have excess weight on their face, like a double chin, try a soft cowl neckline which draws the attention down toward your chest.
#9 Best Clothing Lines
Another thing to strive for is vertical lines, as vertical lines in your clothing create the illusion of continuity and length. With vertical lines you will appear taller and more linear, which is a flattering shape for everyone. The vertical lines could also come from seams, prints, or a textured fabric.
#10 Pencil Skirts
Most women are surprised to find out that one of the most slimming skirts are pencil skirts. The trick to balancing out a pencil skirt is to wear it with a soft top that fits over the hips or even a tunic style top. If you need to expand the waistline so the skirt fits properly, I’d be happy to show you a tailor’s trick that will make wearing pencil skirts so much more comfortable.
#11 Dress in Monochromic Colors
A trick to dress to look slimmer and taller is to dress in a single color for both your pants & tops. Not only will you look slimmer but you will instantly look more elegant as well.
#12 Heels and Shoes
If you want to appear slimmer, start wearing pumps and heels, even kitten heels. In particular, a neutral, beige colored pump will instantly slim & elongate your leg when wearing skirts & dresses. With jeans, a dark navy or black boot with a chunky heel will instantly slim your overall appearance.
#13 Mid-Size Handbags & Cross Body Bags
If you have any handbags in your closet, try pulling out some of the mid-size purses and bags. Big bags will make you appear bulkier and tiny purses can make you look large by comparison. Go with mid-size purses & cross body bags in quality fabrics and simple styles.

Longer necklaces and pendants will make you look slimmer & taller because they draw the eye down. You can also choose chunky statement jewelry that will grab attention. A gorgeous pair of statement earrings will draw people’s attention to your beautiful face. These earrings a perfect example
#15 Scarves
Another great accessory that makes you appear slimmer is a long flowing scarf. Pair a long scarf with dark, straight, slim pants or jeans for a great look with any top, sweater, or jacket.
#16 Basic Wardrobe Colors
You also want to pull out your basic black or classic dark solids from your closet, as these are always going to be the most slimming colors that you can wear. Try wearing black, navy, charcoal, burgundy or chocolate brown to slim and flatter. Go with a pop of bold color in your top or accessories to create a great sense of style.
